Welcome to T-COMmons

T-COMmons is an online community that supports the programs at Southern Polytechnic State University's (SPSU) English, Technical Communication, and Media Arts Department. It is open to anyone (students, alumni, faculty, and supporters) who is involved in technical communication and feels connected to SPSU's learning and teaching objectives.

TCAB Gives to Foundation

Board funds Rainey Scholarship

June 2nd, 2008, was a great day for the TCAB community. Past President Steve Knapp and former Past President David Batley handed over a "big check" in the amount of $424.96 to the Advancement Office's Ms. Kit Trench who handles the Ken Rainey Scholarship Fund.

Since the establishment of the Ken Rainey Scholarship Fund, TCAB has worked to put aside and monies from fund raising events, and in a reflectively short amount of time has been able to generate a worthy amount of dollars for the fund.

Current TCAB President Nancy Silver, who's larger-than-life signature appears on the check, noted, "We hope that this is the first of many installments going to this great cause. The funding of this type of program is just one of the many ways TCAB works to bring a common good to the university and the technical communications programs at SPSU. Thanks to all members of TCAB for making this happen.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Steve Knapp, David Batley, Claudia Ludlow, and Annie Bragg. Thanks for bringing this all together.

You can help support SPSU, the Ken Rainey Scholarship Fund, and TCAB by making a tax deductible donation today.

Congratulations!

Tom Burns, a graduate of the MS program, and adjunct faculty member, has been accepted into the highly-competitive Ph.D. program at Texas Tech University, the only online Ph.D. in our field. Tom is currently on our TCAB advisory board, and, although he will no longer have the time to teach for us, he plans to stay active on the TCAB. Way to go, Tom! You can read more about Tom and his decision to get his Doctorate in the Career Spotlight.

Adieu, Dr. Shauf; Bonjour, Dr. Palmer

Shauf Departs After 3 Great Years

We will greatly miss the many contributions made by Dr. Michele Shauf in her three years in the department, and we wish her well in her return to consulting and new business opportunities. She will be missed by faculty, staff, and students. We will look forward to staying in touch and seeing her at upcoming T-COMmons community events. Did Dr. Shauf have an impact on you? Tell everyone about it on the Bulletin Board.

Dr. Laura Palmer, a newly minted Ph.D. from Texas Tech, with a professional background in business/technical communication with RBC (Canada) will take over the graduate courses Dr. Shauf has taught, particularly Technical Writing and Editing, but also look for her new courses that are being added to our graduate and undergraduate curriculum.

Recently in Atlanta to go house-hunting, she met for an informal gathering with the graduate faculty to help with the transition. We look forward to seeing her at upcoming T-COMmons events. Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Dr. Palmer.
