On April 28th, 2009, SPSU’s Technical Communication Advisory Board (TCAB) hosted a reception for upcoming and recent graduates of English, Technical Communication and Media Arts (ETC&MA) bachelors’ programs. TCAB members Claudia Ludlow, Dorothy Whisenhunt, Astrid Dahl, Mirhonda Studevant and Portfolio course professors Dr. Kim Haimes-Korn and Dr. Herb Smith participated in reception festivities. Special thanks to TCAB member Jill Casavant for planning the reception.

Equivalent to a Capstone project in other disciplines, ETC&MA seniors completed comprehensive paper-based and digital portfolios. Both portfolio versions are presented and judged during fall and spring Portfolio Open House events. The 2008-2009 academic year marked the first that the program produced enough senior bachelor candidates to justify two open house events. TCAB members, faculty, friends, and proud parents attended the open house nights. The event showcased traditional, hard-copy portfolios and computer workstations with online portfolios. The students demonstrated their expertise in writing, layout, graphic illustration and web design. Students also explained their concept, theme and development methods to attendees, many who work in the technical communication profession.

Though all the portfolios showcased excellent work, the Senior Reception event recognizes finalists whose portfolios reflect the best in creative and technical writing as well as information and graphic design.   This year’s Rainey Inspiration Award for outstanding work by an undergraduate student was  given to  Tamara Herman. Tamara’s award-winning portfolio reflected an innovative mix of graphic and web design, sketching and information design. Tamara also designed the spring Portfolio Open House invitation. In addition to a certificate award, Tamara received a $250 prize check.

Honorable Mention certificate awards were also presented to the following
students:

  • Erica Bethel

  • Isaac Jones

  • Twila McConnell

  • Michael Somer

  • Wen Zhang

The winner and all of the Honorable Mentions, plus Dr. Haimes-Korn, Dr. Smith, and TCAB members
