Graduate Student Reception

January 15th, 2008, The Technical Communication Advisory Board (TCAB) held the first ever Graduate Reception to welcome new graduate students to the English, Technical Communication and Media Arts department. There was a small ceremony to congratulate the first ever Graduate Student winners of the Rainey Inspiration Award. This award is sponsored by TCAB and named for Dr. Ken Rainey. Projects are nominated by the professors and selected by a panel of expert judges. This year the selection process was not easy because of all the great work going on in the IDC program, but a team of four students came out on top: Candace Sommer, Karenlie Riddering, Penn White and Bryan Page. Karenlie Riddering and Bryan Page were there to accept the award on behalf of their team. The project was a marketing communication package to promote the Nacoochee Valley Heritage and Nature Preserve. The deliverables included a branding image, white paper for investors, brochure, and website.

The reception took place in the J Building, Room 381 from 6 to 8 PM on the SPSU campus. There were about 25 people in attendance, including department head, Dr. Mark Nunes, TCAB Faculty advisor Dr. Carol Barnum, and graduate faculty Dr. Betty Oliver, Dr. Michele Shauf, and Dr. Keith Hopper. Dr. Hopper provided the entertainment with his great presentation that highlighted many of the professors in the IDC program. Dr. Carol Barnum presented the awards to the winning team. Also in attendance were many members of TCAB and other alumni who took a few moments to share their experiences about the program with the new students. Light refreshments were served and a good time was had by all. TCAB looks forward to welcoming the new graduate students in the future.
